An expert recognized as a "go-to" authority. Someone who is out in front, providing higher-level thinking that helps an organization stay relevant. Innovators best known for the "latest and greatest" contributions in their felds. These are a few of the many defnitions shared by members of the Cornell community recently surveyed about the defnition of "thought leader." You see thought leadership playing out every day at ILR — in media coverage when professors share their perspectives on workplace topics, in the classroom when a lecture inspires an undergraduate to think beyond the defned path, and in our professional development programs where practitioners gain new knowledge and insight about best practices. In this issue of Advance, we focus on thought leader- ship. Throughout the magazine, you'll see examples of distinguished alumni who have risen to the top of their professions, faculty whose research breaks new ground, and students whose global service has helped change people's lives. As ILR thought leaders, they have gained respect for their vision, their passion and their ability to lead the futures of their disciplines. I also wanted to take a moment to recognize Chris Crooker, who recently moved on to a new position after 11 years as ILR's head of Alumni Affairs and Development. Under Chris's leadership, ILR achieved unprecedented success with alumni engagement and fundraising. For those who worked with Chris, you know how much he cares about the school and how he approached his work, always, with professionalism, sensitivity and humor. Chris left an indelible mark on the school, and he will be missed. 11 MESSAGE FROM THE KENNETH F. KAHN DEAN HARRY KATZ
