Dear Alumni and Friends,
Commencement is a reminder of the constant change that takes
place at ILR and Cornell. It seems like a short time ago that the
Class of 2013 came to campus for move-in day in August 2009.
Now, in just a few weeks, they receive their diplomas and start the
next phase of their lives. For me, as we prepare to graduate
another class, there are always mixed emotions. It's bittersweet,
inevitable and wonderful — all at the same time.
I have enjoyed getting to know several members of this class.
Some have other ILRies in their family. Others I have come to know
through their leadership roles in various ILR student groups such
as the Student Government Association or through their
involvement in the Senior Class Campaign.
Cornell's Senior Class Campaign emphasizes participation and
seeks to encourage seniors at all seven undergraduate colleges to
make a gift of any size to the designation of their choice at the
university. I am impressed that so many of the ILR seniors
demonstrate their philanthropic spirit at such a young age.
As I think about the senior class and graduation, this also brings to
mind an interesting contrast. Students at Cornell and at the ILR
School are here just a short time, but they become alumni for life.
It's inspiring to see, year after year, the enduring strength of the
ILR experience and how ILRies maintain lifetime connections with
the school and each other. The opportunity to work with such
committed alums — people who love the school so much — makes
my job really special.
So, let's hear it for the Class of 2013! I know that more than 11,000
ILRies are ready to welcome the newest graduates into ILR's
worldwide family.
