Assistant Professor, You joined ILR in 2011. What was most memorable in your first year? I had some students approach me even before I taught my first class. China currently has more labor unrest than any other country in the world. My work aims to understand how unions, the state and employers are responding to this, and to consider the political and economic implications of ongoing conflict. Of course, given China's incredible importance in the global economy, these issues have a major impact far beyond their own borders. What about you surprises most people? Well, in China people are always shocked that I speak Chinese. And people here are surprised when they find out I'm a serious Mets fan ... even after so many years of losing! When you're not working, how do you spend your time? I do quite a bit of traveling, I love listening to music, baking sourdough bread, and reading, though sometimes my "pleasure reading" is embarrassingly academic. What do you think sets Cornell and ILR apart? ILR is quite unique for its excellence in labor issues, not only in the U.S., but internationally, as well. Cornell is in many ways exceptional among universities. There are so many colleagues here who share my interests and who I can collaborate with. As someone who has focused on labor politics and work for my entire academic career, this is a very special place. 8 ADVANCE
