Message from the Kenneth F. Kahn Dean Harry Katz We're pleased to introduce Advance, ILR's newest publication for alumni and friends. Why did we choose the name Advance? It connects to our mission — advancing the world of work. Even more, the content is designed to help you see how ILR remains forward looking, staying relevant as work and the workplace evolve. The magazine's name speaks to the thought leadership of our faculty, whose research advances bring important new insight to global problems; and to the contributions of our students, who use what they're learning to drive progress and effect positive change, from New York state to India and beyond. ILR has always been out in front in its efforts to engage with the world, applying our knowledge and expertise to help people work and live better. This is especially timely as Cornell celebrates 150 years as a land-grant institution described as "expansive, endlessly adaptable and always relevant to the needs of society." Our public engagement is an expression of that mission. In this issue of Advance, you'll see several examples of ILR engagement and its impact: • A feature on global service learning shows how our students are stimulating economic and community development and making a difference through out-of-classroom experiences. • A story about The Worker Institute, launched in September, explains how ILR faculty and students will collaborate with the labor community, policymakers and others to help better ensure protections for workers of all kinds, throughout the world. Our alumni, too, are key to helping ILR advance, through their leadership, involvement and support. You'll read about exceptional ILRies, the work they do to strengthen their organizations, and the commitments they make to further enrich the ILR experience for students. We plan to publish Advance twice a year, once in the fall and in the spring. We hope you enjoy the first issue and we welcome your feedback.
